Nintendo's Wii has been one of the most profitable games consoles ever sold, and after its launch in 2006, Nintendo took months to satisfy pent-up demand. This enabled the company to charge a premium price for its hardware and make large profits while rivals such as Sony and Microsoft were losing money on every machine they

One might argue that Angelenos are by nature always in costume, but the pressure of outward appearance is never greater than on Halloween. Although many have been crafting their costumes since July, others among us will scramble around the house with mere hours to spare, t

US Airways Group Inc., which sounded upbeat about traffic rebounding when it announced a smaller-than-expected third-quarter loss earlier this month, Wednesday unveiled a major route retrenchment and job cuts aimed at returning the company to profitability.
The sixth-largest U.S. airline by traffic, US Airways said it is realigning its operations to focus almost exclusively on flights from its three domestic hubs: Charlotte, N.C.; Philadelphia; and Phoenix.
It also will retain a

(CNN) -- The shutdown of a major artery linking the California cities of San Francisco and Oakland sent area officials scrambling overnight to develop plans to ease congestion for Wednesday morning's rush hour.
The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge closed indefinitely Tuesday night after a piece of the span fell onto the roadway, prompting the thousands who use the bridge to hunt for alternative routes. The 73-year-old bridge spans the San Francisco Bay and carries an average of

Ribosomes are the manufacturing machines for proteins, which participate in almost every chemical reaction key to life. To study the chemistry of life, it is essential to know the functions and structure of the ribosome. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry goes to three researchers who mapped the positions of atoms in ribosomes, which could lead to more efficient antibiotics.
The 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas A. Steitz, and Ada E. Yo

Levi Johnston, of Sarah Palin’s grandbaby daddy fame, has showed up in a new ad for Wonderful Pistachios.
After viewing it a couple of times, I have four quick questions:
1) Are we to believe that people outside of Levi Johnston’s caribou hunting club (and perhaps Kathy Griffin’s fanbase) actually recognize him when he struts awkwardly down on the street, let alone yell

Two men are in custody after several warnings were sent to students of a possible gunman on the University of South Florida's Tampa campus.
A police spokesman told the Tampa Tribune a man stood up on a campus bus and said he was the one authorities were looking for. He told them he had a bomb, but later said it was just a hoax, spokeswoman Laura McElroy told the newspaper.
The first suspect, described as an African American male in a green and yello

A North American tour by Kanye West has been cancelled just weeks after he was criticised for storming on stage at an awards ceremony.
The rap star has experienced widespread negative publicity since he interrupted country star Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards.
He told her Beyonce should have won the best female award instead.
No reason has been given but West has admitted he needed to take time off to grieve for his mother.

As the first lady walked through the hotel lobby Wednesday, she spotted IOC member Nicole Hoevertsz, who only a day earlier had been appointed permanent secretary of Aruba's Council of Ministers.
"She said, 'Congratulations on your new appointment.' She already knew," Hoevertsz said. "That was a very nice detail."

Sarah Palin may no longer be governor of Alaska, but she's certainly destined to become a best-selling author. HarperCollins, her publisher, has announced the print-run of her memoir will be a staggering 1.5 million copies -- equal to the print-run of Senator Ted Kennedy's posthumous autobiography published this month. Publishing sources tell me that such a giant run is only ordered up when there is clear evidence from booksellers and surveys of massive interest in a book.
The book, wh

In the final hours of her campaign for re-election, Chancellor Angela Merkel proclaimed that anchoring worldwide the principles of the German economic and social model would be a main task of a new government in Berlin.
Mrs. Merkel said this was a matter “of the defense of our ideals,” according to a dispatch from the German-language service of The Associated Press.
To say the least, here was a fairly puzzling and even contradictory statement about where the world’s leading expo
